Mary J. Blige performed an outdoor concert for the “Today” show on Friday, as part of the summer Citi Concert Series.
As Gossip Cop reported, the “Today” show unveiled its 2017 concert lineup just last week. A Harry Styles concert kicked off the series, followed by a New Kids On The Block concert this past Monday. The Zac Brown Band had its turn on Tuesday, and now Blige was in the Rockefeller Plaza spotlight. Hundreds of fans showed up to watch her perform outside the morning show’s Manhattan studios.
Blige’s three-song set included “Thick Of It,” “Family Affair,” and “U + Me.” While “Family Affair” is a Blige classic, the other two tracks are from the singer’s new album, Strength Of A Woman, which came out last month. “Thick Of It” originally dropped last October as the lead single, followed by “U & Me” in February. Blige co-wrote every song on the record, which was largely inspired by her split from husband and manager Kendu Isaacs.
The performer now said on the “Today” show, “It’s a blessing I can take all my trials and tribulations. Everybody knows what’s going on. It’s awful. It’s a bad thing. I don’t know want to keep talking about it so much. But it is what it is. I wouldn’t be Mary J. Blige if I couldn’t use my own music as therapy to get me through this thing.”
As Gossip Cop reported, in April Blige insisted she was hacked when a tweet appeared on her Twitter feed saying, “f*ck Kendu Isaacs I f*cking hate him and his whole family. I unfollowed him on IG & ALL of my fans need 2. #StrengthOfAWoman 4/28 #DuDeadDay.” After it was deleted, she told followers, “I was hacked with that message about Kendu. I dont hate him & his family. Nor do I wish death on him. I just want this 2 B over.”
Whatever Blige’s feelings on the end of her marriage, it seems they can be heard though her music. Watch videos and pics of her “Today” performance and interview below.
