Ground Beef Recalled by Colorado Manufacturer After E. coli Death

Time to check your freezers. A Colorado meatpacker has issued a voluntary recall of more than 132,000 pounds of ground beef after an E. coli outbreak killed at least one person and sickened 17 more.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Wednesday that Cargill Meat Solutions produced and packaged the beef in Fort Morgan on June 21, and shipped to stores across the nation.

The products recalled by Cargill include their 3, 10, and 20-pound packages of ground beef under the "Our Certified, Excel, Sterling Silver, Certified and Fire River Farms brands." The packages are marked with a July 11 use or freeze by date.

The same Cargill plant also had another, smaller, recall of Excel ground beef in August, but there were no illnesses reported as a result of that recall.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people infected with E. coli can develop diarrhea and vomiting. More severe infections can lead to kidney failure or even death.

The FDA is urging consumers who purchased the products not to consume them. People should throw away or return the meat to the place of purchase for a refund.
