How To Tune In To The Final Presidential Debate

What time is the debate?

The debate will begin at 9 p.m. ET and is expected to end at 10:30 p.m. ET.

Who is moderating?

Kristen Welker will moderate tonight's debate. Welker is a Philadelphia native of Black and Native American heritage. After graduating from the prestigious Germantown Friends School, she attended Harvard University where she studied history and graduated with honors in 1998. Just a year before her graduation, she worked as an intern with the Today show. After graduating, she worked with ABC affiliates in Rhode Island and California before transferring over to work with NBC's WCAU affiliate in her hometown, Philadelphia. Putting in five years of hard work, Welker went back to California as the network's west coast correspondent. Within two years, she was promoted to the network's White House Correspondent role. She now appears regularly on NBC's Nightly News and Weekend Today as well as MSNBC. She is the only person of color to moderate a presidential debate during this election cycle.

What topics will be covered?

As previously discussed, the moderator has chosen the topics for tonight's verbal sparring session. Welker will ask questions pertaining to the following topics:

  • Fighting COVID-19
  • American Families
  • Race in America
  • Climate Change
  • National Security
  • Leadership

What is the format of the debate?

The debate will consist of six, 15-minute segments. At the beginning of each segment, the moderator will ask each candidate an opening question. Both candidates will have two minutes each to answer the question before the two engaging in an open discussion for approximately 11 minutes. However, the opposing candidate's microphone will be muted during the other candidate's two-minute opening answer.

Where is the debate taking place?

Tonight's debate will take place at the Curb Event Center on the campus of Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Who is hosting the debate?

The Commission on Presidential Debates has has sponsored all general election presidential and vice presidential debates since 1987. CPD is a nonpartisan organization that does not receive funding from either major political party.

How many more debates will there be?

Tonight's debate is the second and final presidential debate for the 2020 presidential election.
